Overall the Juniors did
exceptionally well. Everyone who entered came home with a Metal
Under 10, Sofie and
Jenna, Jenna won 1st place and Sofie got 2nd.
Under 12, Alexander
Lim got Silver with 2 wins and a loss in his division. Alexander
lost his first match by decision and won the remaining two matches with a
Yuko and a Wazari.
Under 12, Hailey won Gold
with 2 Ippons. Hailey threw her Opponents with her Seionage followed
by a Taitoshi. Hailey has been listening to what we have been
teaching. She moved into Seionage which caught her Opponent off balance ;
stuck out her leg while still pulling and turning her body until her opponent
went flying over her hips. She repeated the same technique in her second
match. She scored 2 wazari’s with this throw in this match.
Under 14, Klava, won Gold
with 2 ippons. In all of her matches, She scored a Wazari
with an Osotogari, then held her opponents down with Kesa gatame.
Under 18, Sean Bray,
lost his matches but placed second because there were only 2 in his
division. Sean lost his matches when his Opponent countered his Osotogari
attempt. Sean’s movement was slow and he did not take Kuzushii
(Unbalancing his Opponent) when he moved into Osotogari. His body stance was
out of position when he attacked. He was standing too upright, no
bend in his legs.
Andrey had to withdraw his
name from the tournament because he has the flu.
Senior Men Division
In the Light Middle
division - Djuro Miladinovic and Gai Tian Gao were the only
contestants in this division. So they fought against each other twice.
Djuro won both of the matches with a Yuko or a Wazari , then held
Gai down in Kesagata for an Ippon.
Djuro won Gold and Gai
received a Silver
Since Djuro had no outside
Competitor in his Division, he entered the LIGHT HEAVY WEIGHT
DIVISION.
He placed third but
should have taken the Gold if he didn’t make mental mistakes.
In his first match, Djuro was
winning the match by scoring several Yukos and a Wazari. He had his
Opponent in a Kesagatame and had to hold on for another 2 seconds for an
Ippon. His Opponent escaped just before the Ippon was called. Near
the end of the match, his Opponent attempted a Drop Taiotoshi.
Djuro was standing on his feet , not moving to the side nor countering
him when his Opponent did this move. He kept pulling which forced Djuro
to his knees. He got Djuro into Kesagatame which Djuro escaped out of but his
Opponent was shifty enough to move into another holddown which had Djuro tied
up .
In his second match, Djuro
scored a Yuko or a Wazari with a Taiotoshi Makikomi on his Left Side.
Unfortunately, instead of Djuro landing on top of him and securing him for a
holddown, his Opponent who was thrown to the Mat use the momentum of the throw
and turned Djuro over and pinned him for a Holddown.
In his final match against
Alan Wong, Djuro and Alan went at each other constantly attacking but Djuro had
the upper hand scoring a Yuko on a throw and scoring a Wazari with a
Kesagatame holddown. Eventually , Djuro moved into his Taiotoshi to score
an Ippon.
Alan, who now practices with
the Victoria Judo Club had 3 tough matches. Alan is always giving 100
percent effort. He could have won at least his first match against his
Victoria team mate who placed second. It was a very close match with Alan
ahead on points before he lost to him.
Alan was griping his Opponent
behind his Collar and attempting Koshiguruma and a hip throw like
Haraigoshi. Its’ okay to grip like this if you are taller but if you are
at the same height or a bit shorter, you can easily get countered because your
center of gravity is high. When Alan got countered when he attempted
Koshiguruma, his hips hit his Opponents waist. To unbalance your Opponent, your
Hips must make contact below the waist line. Alan would have succeeded if
he would have gripped his lapel and attempted a Seio otoshi or Seionage which
is his Tokuiwaza instead of Koshiguruma.
