NANAIMO TOURNAMENT MARCH 27, 2010

The Nanaimo tournament held March 27 at the Malaspina University had less competitors compared to other years. Since Nanaimo's tournament wasn't chosen as a select tournament this year, only the local Brown and Blackbelts showed up for this meet. The Junior group and the Senior Men's Blue Belt and under Divisions accounted for most of the participants. That said, the competition in some of the divisions were very good.

We had all of our 4 Seniors fight in the Middleweight Novice group. This group had the largest participants. Normally, any tournament winds up with the Blackbelt finale being the last match of the event. This year, because of the numbers in the Middleweight Novice, the last match of the day was between Kelvin Chan from our club and another competitor from the Island for 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

The results: Suzanne Beaulieu took Gold in the Juvenile Division 57 kg and under. She won both of her matches with Ippon.

Kelvin Chan took bronze in the Middleweight with 6 matches. Lost his last match for silver. All of Kelvin's victory were scored by Ippon Throws.

Other participants:
Nicole Beaulieu
had 2 matches. Her second match was very close and she fought with confidence and controlled her opponent throughout the match. She lost by Yuko when her Opponent countered her move as she attempted an Osotogari. Nicole should have attempted a Seio otoshi or Taiotoshi move instead.

Eugene Orina fought in the juvenile men 51 kg division. He had 1 win and 2 losses. With more tournament experience, Eugene will perform in future tournaments like he does at practice. Its a matter of confidence and overcoming the FEAR FACTOR.

Hitoshi Tagaki withdrew because of his neck injury.

Paul Le had an opportunity to win the Senior Men Blue Belt Division but lack of experience costed him a Medal. Paul showed grit and determination but inexperience was a factor in all of his matches in both divisions that he entered. Again, like Eugene, I'm know that Paul will succeed with tournament experience.

Rishi Moorjani was in the Middleweight Novice division but because of the numbers we had in this division, our members eliminated each other. Rishi was leading in his first match by scoring a Wazari on a Taiotoshi which was very well executed. His opponent went flying through the air. The only reason Rishi did not score an Ippon was because he did not follow through on his throw. More Hikite (main pull)and completing the turn would have had his Opponent land on his Back instead of landing on his side. Rishi eventually lost the match when he failed to counter his opponent's Taiotoshi move which we had been practicing lately. We learn from our mistakes, become stronger and hopefully better JUDOKAS.

Ashvin Moorjani's first tournament. Ashvin went 4 rounds before he was eliminated by Kelvin Chan. Ashvin's first match was with the eventual Winner in this Division. His opponent was actually too good for this Division. Ashvin had unbalanced his Opponent as he attempted a left handed Ippon Seionage. But his opponent recovered from his attack and was able to counter Ashvin's throw because he stopped his forward thrust. Ashvin backed out of the Seionage. Ashvin must have felt the resistance from his opponent. In other word, Ashvin stopped the hikite pull. As I told Ashvin later and I've mentioned it in class, NEVER, Never, back out of a throw if you don't want to get countered. There is only one movement when you attempt a forward throw and that is... THE FORWARD GEAR. NO REVERSE!
Ashvin has to relax more. He is too stiff even at the Dojo practice. He has to overcome the FEAR OF BEING THROWN. DO more breakfalls. IN PRACTICE, get thrown more often and be relaxed while being tossed in the Air. Heed this advice and the movements will be more fluid, your throws that you perform will be EFFECTIVE with more POWER AND LESS EFFORT.

Even though we came out with fewer medals, overall, I was pleased with the efforts that our members put out. We left very early in the morning to catch the ferry to Nanaimo and we arrived back at the Renfrew Parking Lot around 7:00 pm. Everyone had a good time. Next time, next year, lets look foward to having twice the number of participants for this tournament. Teams from Vancouver Island come to our Lower Mainland tournaments 4- 5 times a year. The least we can do to support Judo on the Island is by reciprocating the favour once a year.
